New deal and award for Boro’s Watmore

- LEONWOBSCHALL

MIDDLESBROUGH winger Duncan Watmore has topped off signing a new contract by being named as the Championship’s player of the month for December.

The 26- year- old has been rewarded for his stellar form in the final month of 2020 which saw him net five goals – the most scored by a second- tier player.

The ex- Sunderland player beat off competition from Derby City defensive midfielder Krystian Bielik, Brentford winger Sergi Canos and Norwich City midfielder Emi Buendia to claim the gong.

The greater prize for manager Neil Warnock and Boro fans is the sight of him agreeing terms on a new two- and- a- half year deal.

Watmore’s short- term deal was due to expire next weekend, with Stoke City, Watford, Bristol City and Swansea City linked with moves alongside the top- flight duo of West Brom and Burnley.

But Watmore, who linked up with Boro in November, insists his decision to stay was easy.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to have signed. Ever since I came here a few months ago, I’ve been treated so well by everyone involved. I have loved my time here and I am looking forward to playing a lot more for the Boro.

“There were other clubs that were interested, but it was an easy decision. Boro is a fantastic club. I am very grateful for the opportunity the club gave me and the faith that was shown in me.”

Barnsley head coach Valerien Ismael lost out in the managerial vote in the Championship, with the December accolade going to Brentford’s Thomas Frank.
