Town hand immediate debut to new defender

- CHAMPIONSHIP STUART RAYNER

IN RICHARD Keogh, coach Carlos Corberan believes Huddersfield Town have signed a player who can not only fill an important hole, but help their youngsters.

The Terriers have suffered a spate of injuries at centre-back. Tommy Elphick has been out with a cruciate knee ligament injury since early last season, and recently Richard Stearman and Christopher Schindler joined him on the sidelines. The trio brought much-needed leadership to a squad with a heavy emphasis on youth.

As a result, Huddersfield have signed 34-year-old Keogh from Milton Keynes Dons until the summer.

He will make his debut at home to Millwall tonight, even with Naby Sarr fit again – Keogh’s 22nd appearance of the season.

“He has the minutes in the legs and the skills to play the ball from the back,” argues Corberan.

“His experience can also help develop the young players. When a player has played consistently for 10 years at a high level they can give a lot of advice because in 10 years you have lived all the moments football offers a player.”

Keogh, who had a 10-game loan at then-League One Huddersfield in 2007-08, made his Championship debut for Coventry City in 2010 and last played in the second tier as Derby County captain in September 2019. Shortly afterwards he was controversially sacked after a season-ending injury in a car crash where team-mates Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett pleaded guilty to drink driving.

Isaac Mbenza and Alex Pritchard are set to return for tonight’s 7pm kick-off.
