BRITISH STARS IN RUNNING FOR OSCARS Diversity to fore in line-up for Hollywood awards
CAREY MULLIGAN, Riz Ahmed and Daniel Kaluuya are among the British actors nominated for Oscars after this year’s shortlist was revealed yesterday.
Kaluuya is nominated for the best supporting actor prize for his role as Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah.
Riz Ahmed scored a best actor nod for his role as a drummer who loses his hearing in Sound Of Metal, alongside Gary Oldman for his role as the Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz in Mank and Sir Anthony Hopkins for his turn in drama The Father, about a man slipping into dementia.
Olivia Colman has also scored an Oscar nod for her supporting role in The Father.
Ahmed wrote on Instagram: “Wow! I’m honoured to be nominated by my fellow actors alongside such inspiring performances, and am grateful to the Academy for their support and encouragement.
The late actor Chadwick Boseman , who died last August, is considered to be the front runner in the category for his performance as an ambitious trumpeter in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He died aged 43 last August due to complications related to colon cancer. Mulligan is nominated for best actress for her role as a grieving woman seeking revenge in Promising Young Woman, alongside Vanessa Kirby, for her turn in Pieces Of A Woman.
Sacha Baron Cohen, nominated in the best supporting actor category for his role as social activist Abbie Hoffman in The Trial Of The Chicago 7, tweeted: “Congratulations Aaron Sorkin and the entire team behind Chicago 7 for six Oscar nominations!”
