Ability to adapt key to Wednesday’s survival bid

- NICK WESTBY

DARREN MOORE says he will continue to take a flexible approach to how he sets Sheffield Wednesday up in games as the battle for Championship survival intensifies.

Moore has yet to oversee a victory in his three games in charge and in all, Wednesday have lost seven in a row to fall seven points adrift of safety with 11 games remaining.

Yet there has been gradual improvement, as witnessed on Sunday in a promising first half against Norwich before the runaway Championship leaders restored order after the interval.

Moore set Wednesday up with three at the back on Sunday having begun his tenure with a 4-2-31 formation against Rotherham.

Ahead of a huge Yorkshire derby with a suddenly-resurgent Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night, he said: “I’ve got to be flexible because there are so many different variations in teams this season that it will be what we feel at the time is the best system to get us a result.

“It will be about stopping the opponents, stopping their strengths and then trying to expose their weaknesses.

“Ultimately we’re in a situation here where we need to win games so if we need to tweak and change the formation and the personnel then that’s what we’ll do.

“That’s all I’m interested in. We’re another game down but there’s still some big games to come so we’ll then look to the next one.

“We’ll look to get that all important win because I feel when we do the dynamics will change here.”

And Moore remains bullish that he can extricate Wednesday from the hole that has been dug by a six-point deduction and three managers before him in a season of turmoil.

“The games are still there and we’ve got to keep working,” he said, with a trip to buoyant

Barnsley on Saturday following Wednesday night’s visit of the Terriers.

“We’ve got an opportunity on Wednesday to close the gap.

“There’s no chance of anyone throwing in the towel, we keep going. That’s why we were so disappointed against Norwich because we were so close to getting a really positive result.

“The grit and determination is there. This is not a Sheffield Wednesday team that is throwing the towel in.”
