Bielsa hoping Roberts learns lesson from his Wales mistake
MARCELO BIELSA has told Tyler Roberts to learn from the mistake that saw him sent home from Wales’s World Cup qualifiers, but there will be no further repercussions at Leeds United.
The 22-year-old was a substitute against Belgium and a starter in the friendly against Mexico, but was one of three players sent home before Tuesday’s win over Czech Republic, apparently for breaking a curfew within the confines of the team hotel.
“When a situation like that happens, it will be solved when he doesn’t commit this error again,” reasoned the former Argentina and Chile coach.
“He already received a sanction from his national team which is an important one.
“I don’t know what the position of the Wales technical staff or their federation is, and they were the people who resolved this matter.”
Wales caretaker manager Robert Page said he will now draw a line under the incident, keeping alive Roberts’s hopes of playing in this summer’s European Championships, and Bielsa thinks the incident could be a positive one.
“Any player that doesn’t adhere to the rules having already accepted them commits an error and errors always have consequences,” he said. “Some of them are positive, to not repeat the same mistakes again.
“Tyler is an inexperienced player, which is a way of understanding some of the behavioural mistakes he has made.”
Captain Liam Cooper is available to face Sheffield United tomorrow after illness, but Mateusz Klich will have to go through various protocols having missed Poland’s three March games, including a trip to Wembley, with Covid-19.
