Elephant in the room – or an elephant trap?

- From: Thomas W Jefferson, Batty Lane, Howden.

RICHARD Wilson, chair of Leeds for Europe (The Yorkshire Post, April 8), thinks Labour should advocate rejoining the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union.

It would be their shortest suicide note in history (as opposed to their longest in 1983) and they could suffer the same fate as the Liberal Democrats in 2019 when their leader was sunk without trace for commending such policies.

If he thinks the electorate will undergo a Damascene conversion because the economic data will prove Brexit to be a mistake, he hasn’t seen the recent forecasts showing that we will outshine the EU for the next couple of years, thus continuing the trend of the last two decades.

He may wish to argue our recent historic performance was because we benefitted from EU membership.

But he then has to explain why the EU didn’t enjoy the same overall growth and lower unemployment.

It’s that elephant in the room that he tries to ignore (incoherent monetary union) which now becomes an elephant trap, requiring his reaction.
