No space for manoeuvre overtheStray
ISN’T it marvellous, just when Harrogate’s bars and restaurants are able to reopen, some will be refused permission to temporarily use outdoor spaces on the Stray while trying to recoup their losses from the Covid pandemic?
It’s a pity they didn’t refuse permission to prevent hundreds of the Tour de Yorkshire cyclists and businesses from outside the area profiting and making a mud bath of the Stray at West Park recently that only seemed to benefit a small amount of Harrogate businesses to the detriment of the remainder.
If the Tour de Yorkshire was allowed, surely we can help Harrogate’s businesses similarly? The town’s businesses are going to struggle as it is with the reduction in street parking spaces available.
As Harrogate’s town centre is losing some big businesses and small alike, we should be making sure the remainder can survive by putting ourselves out and helping them to recover but no, as per usual it’s the other way round.

I WISH to register a complaint against North Yorkshire Council’s waste recycling policy of not allowing trailers over six feet in length.
I have been a customer of the Harrogate West recycling centre for many years and most years will gather up and store my waste at home and take it in my trailer approximately twice per year.
However I have not been for just over a year due to Covid restrictions and regulations. When I attended this week, I was turned away on the basis that Covid regulations imposed by North Yorkshire County Council restrict trailer length to six feet.
My trailer measures eight feet in length. I was forced to therefore return home with my recycling. After several phone calls, it was explained to me that this new rule was to allow social distancing at the recycling centres.
To make matters worse, I was advised that it would be perfectly reasonable for me to park up my vehicle outside the entrance to the tip and transfer the contents of the trailer in to the back of my car and make multiple journeys into the centre.
The obvious result of this action of course would mean considerable additional contact with other customers and staff at the centre.
