‘Greatest little show’ a big success with help from Dangerous Steve
A SMALL country show with a tenacious spirit has proved hugely popular with crowds at a sell-out event.
Weeton Show, hailed the ‘greatest little show in Yorkshire’, is one of only a few to be given the go-ahead this summer after members determined “the show must go on”.
Against the odds, and after a mammoth organisational effort with just 2,000 tickets issued, organisers have hailed a “fabulous” event.
“It’s just a proper English country show, with a bit of everything,” said committee chair Paula Waller . “We’ve got a full house, we’ve run out of tickets.”
Yesterday’s event near Harrogate saw tradition mixed with entertainment in the main ring, with horse classes such as working hunter and ridden cob before a demonstration of chainsaw juggling from ‘Dangerous Steve’.
A dog show proved popular, as did Punch and Judy shows, while there were trade stands and classic cars alongside sheep competitions.
Changes this year saw online ticketing in advance, and the removal of usual tented
attractions. Small in size as it may be, said organisers, it more than made up for it in community spirit.
“It’s been fabulous, the show has been absolutely amazing,” said Ms Waller. “We were up against it, we had to really push to keep going and get the show on. If we don’t, we are in danger of losing that community support.
“We didn’t underestimate the problems we’ve had, but we have overcome them. Speaking to people, they are just happy to be here.”
