Planning design award for service station on M1

-

A MOTORWAY service station in east Leeds has been honoured with a prestigious design award praising its innovation and green credentials.

Skelton Lake was designed by Spawforths architects and planners and has been named winner of the Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) Yorkshire Awards for Planning Excellence.

It was dubbed a “worthy winner” by Yorkshire chair Derek McKenzie, who said it met essential needs while maximising benefits and minimising environmental impact.

The building, at Junction 45 of the M1, has a ‘Green Living’ roof, supporting diversity and helping with its temperature management. It is also designed to make the best use of natural daylight, and with thermal heating to help lower its energy use.

David Rolinson, chairman of Spawforths, said: “This award recognises the efforts of everyone involved in delivering exceptional places.

“We were fortunate enough to be working for a forwardthinking client in Extra MSA Group and alongside an excellent group of professional consultants as well as Leeds planning authority.”
