City sets out clear vision for sculpture visitors

THE FIRST ice sculpture on a trail set to captivate visitors to York has been unveiled.

More than 40 sculptures will line the cobbled streets of the city on March 5 and March 6.

As a taster of what is to come on the York Ice Trail, the Make It York tourism agency placed a sculpture of a hot air balloon on Shambles, the city’s most famous street.

streets of York. There are over 40 ice sculptures to find this year, which have all been kindly sponsored by local businesses.”

Highlights of the trail are set to include York Council’s The York Skyline, which will feature the city’s landmarks in the ice.

A depiction of the Rugby League World Cup Trophy will be carved out of ice to celebrate York hosting eight matches at the tournament in the autumn.

Live ice carving will take place at St Sampson’s Square and there will be opportunit­ies for visitors to try their hand at the art themselves in Parliament Street.

The leader of York Council, Coun Keith Aspden, said: “York Ice Trail was, I’m sure, missed by many last year, so it’s excellent to see the much-loved event return once again in March for residents, families and visitors to enjoy safely.”
