Railway museum offers glimpse of how stations may look in the future

-

MUCH ABOUT the National Railway Museum focuses on the past and the golden age of steam trains.

But one event at the York attraction is more concerned with the future.

The museum launched an immersive virtual reality station experience – ExploreStation – which aims to help the public experience what train stations of the future could be like.

A spokesman explained: “(It) is to re-think how Britain’s small and medium train stations can be designed collaboratively with the public – using cutting-edge technology and engagement techniques to put community knowledge and interests at the heart of station design.”

ExploreStation was at York on Wednesday and yesterday and now heads to Manchester and Liverpool.

It has already engaged with thousands of participants at workshops in Bristol, Cardiff, Sheffield.

The VR experience has been commissioned by Network Rail and delivered by the Design Council in partnership with The Glass-House Community Led Design, Digital Urban and Commonplace.

Network Rail aims to redesign small and medium train stations, which could affect over 2,000 locations.

This VR experience is part of their “national conversations” about the proposed design.

VR users are able to feel the movement of the train as they arrive into a station and explore the detail of the new station designs.

The free events are designed to allow people to ask questions, share ideas, and consider how the design will shape people’s experience of stations.

Re-think how train stations can be designed with the public. The aim of the ExploreStation project which was at York yesterday.
