Club that looked to be facing end of road revs up for busy summer

-

LIKE many good ideas, it started with a group of men having a discussion in a pub.

The Otley-based Chevin Motor Club was set up by car enthusiasts who wanted to travel to motor shows up and down the country.

The idea seemed to run out of steam in 2015 when interest dwindled.

But then a meeting was called to give it new impetus and now seven years on the club is thriving.

Chairman Tony Pinder said: “We have 67 members now, young and old, male and female, and we seem to be going from strength to strength.

“Our members have all sorts of cars and vehicles.

“We had someone turn up in an Aston Martin Vantage at the weekend and we have people with Morris Minors and tractors and even motorcycles – whatever takes their fancy.

“We have a busy years ahead with lots of events on the calendar, which is great.

“We just love to get out and about and look at some nice motors.”

Mr Pinder, an auto electrician before he retired, said motoring seemed to be on the up at the moment. “There is a tremendous amount of interest in automotive things,” he added. “It is something than can appeal to everyone, no matter what age.”

The club staged its most recent event, Cars on the Cobbles, in Otley at the weekend and there are many more in the pipeline.

The group – which bills itself as “a motor club for motor nuts” – will be attending Menston Cricket Club fun day from 11am on June 2.

Members will also be present at a motor show and family fun day at Harrogate Rugby Union Football Club on June 18.

And a summer run will be staged on June 19, with the route yet to be determined.

On July 3 the club will take part in a show at Keighley Rugby Union Club which will feature classic cars and bikes, American cars, tractors, static engines, amusements, stalls and refreshments. All proceeds will go to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.

And on July 24 members will be present at the Ripon Classic Car Gathering.

Mr Pinder said: “We cater for all vehicle types from old British and American classics to much newer high-performance vehicles.”

The club meets on every second Thursday in the month at the White Swan in Boroughgate, Otley.
