Attraction of a guided tour with a difference as stately home reopens
TOMORROW IS a landmark day for one of Yorkshire’s best-loved homes.
Scampston Hall, near Malton, will be reopening to the public for guided tours after the gardens and parkland opened to the public at the end of March.
It is a regency-style house set within parkland designed by Capability Brown and is known for its award-winning contemporary walled garden which sits within the 18th century kitchen garden walls.
Scampston Estate has been in the same family for over three centuries.
The hall was remodelled in 1800 and its elegant regency interiors can be viewed once more – it is said to be one of the finest examples of a regency stately home in North Yorkshire.
It is also home to Christopher and Miranda Legard and their family.
Mr Legard, owner of Scampston Hall, said: “We open the hall for a short but special period over the summer months.
“As it is a family home, our hope is that guided tours are a more intimate experience than visits to many other stately home attractions.
“Miranda and I delight in welcoming the public and sharing the collections built up by my ancestors. We offer a warm welcome, being greeted by the butler, Craig, or myself, and liven up each tour with some excellent anecdotes.”
The estate’s art collection is extensive and includes a number of paintings by Gainsborough and Marlow. The hall will be available for afternoon guided tours from tomorrow until July 31.
The hall is open Wednesday to Friday, as well as Sundays and Bank Holidays, and tours take place at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm.
Within the grounds, Scampston Walled Garden is a contemporary garden, designed by the renowned Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf, and feature modern, perennial meadow planting alongside more traditional areas.
Scampston Hall and the Walled Garden are situated on the north side of the A64 just to the east of the village of Rillington.
We liven up each tour with some excellent anecdotes. Christopher Legard, the owner of Scampston Hall, near Malton.
