Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard returns to helm the fifth chapter of the MonsterVer­se franchise, which began a decade ago with the special effects-laden revival of Godzilla.

This latest box office behemoth begins with Godzilla ruling the waves while Kong reigns supreme over the Hollow Earth. A devastatin­g new threat emerges which jeopardise­s not only humanity’s existence but also the survival of the mighty titans.

Two gigantic rivals unite in an epic battle of strength and tenacity to combat a terrifying force rooted in the mysterious history of Skull Island. Anthropolo­gist Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), who works for secret scientific organisati­on Monarch, her deaf ward Jia (Kaylee Hottle) and conspiracy theorist podcaster (Brian Tyree Henry) are drawn into the eye of the storm.

This fast-paced romp begins with pirates kidnapping a polar bear named Polito and three penguin brothers. The abducted animals are pressgange­d into performing in a circus but they escape and seek refuge with plucky rooster Toto and his family. Toto agrees to help Polito and the penguins return to their home in the South Pole. However, the nefarious circus owners are determined to reclaim the missing animals.

The enduring power of the human spirit stands firm in the face of trauma in a moving drama directed by Anthony Chen. The film marks the English language debut of Singaporea­n filmmaker Chen, who won the Camera d’Or prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival with his debut feature, Ilo Ilo. Penniless Liberian refugee Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo) lands on a Greek island, hoping to escape painful memories of her war-torn nation. Far from home, she copes with her past alone but the scars are deep and then an unexpected and tender friendship with directionl­ess tour guide Callie (Alia Shawkat) offers some hope for the future.
