Plenty to talk about as record stores celebrate
BIG debates in South Yorkshire, MPs get back to Parliament, record stores celebrate and a food festival returns for another year. We take a look at the week ahead.
DEBATE DATE
The Festival of Debate – billed as the ‘largest annual politics festival in the UK’ – gets under way in South Yorkshire tomorrow.
Over the next month, guest speakers such as Marianna Spring, George Monbiot, Sathnam Sanghera, James O’Brien, Grace Blakeley and Natalie Bennett will be in Sheffield as part of the programme.
The first events – War! What is it Good For? University Arms Trade Links at the Utopia Theatre and Systemic Change: Improving Outcomes for Sheffield at the Charles Street Building – will take place tomorrow.
Founded in 2015 by Opus Independents, the festival collaborates with a range of organisations, from local to international, including grassroots campaign groups, voluntary and community groups, universities and think tanks.
PARLIAMENT BACK
MPs return to the House of Commons this week after the Easter recess and Yorkshire’s members will be raising issues which are important to their constituents.
Judith Cummins, Labour MP for Bradford South, will present a Ten Minute Rule
Motion about the noise limits of fireworks on Wednesday after Prime Minister’s Questions.
She has previously said that the “the misuse of fireworks is a round-the-clock blight across Bradford” and last year asked the Home Secretary, James Cleverly, to reduce the legal maximum volume of fireworks from 120 to 90dB, meaning they “can be enjoyed without the disruptive noise impact”.
Meanwhile, the Conservative MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, Andrew Jones, will lead an adjournment debate on the standards of new-build homes in North Yorkshire on Thursday.
MUSIC MAGIC
Record Store Day returns on Saturday this week as music shops in Yorkshire and across the UK will sell special vinyl releases and host performances. The event launched in the UK in 2008, and this year there will be more than 270 independent record shops participating.
Kate Bush is this year’s official ambassador of Record Store Day UK and will release a special edition of her hit, Eat The Music, exclusively in certain independent record shops at the weekend.
FOOD FUN
The Pocklington Food and Drink Festival will be on for the second time this weekend after the success of the inaugural event last year.
Stalls will be on the Market Place in Pocklington on Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
As well as food there will be a live music stage, bars and entertainment for children.
