Members of the congregation are seen screaming and rushing to the bishop’s aid.
Ambulance chiefs said paramedicstreated am an in his 50 sf or multiple cuts and took him to hospital. Three others were being treated for one or more cuts at the scene.
“A large police response is under way and the public is urged to avoid the area,” police said.
It came as Australians were still in shock after a lone assailant stabbed six people to death in a busy Sydney shopping mall on Saturday and injured more than a dozen others.
A black ribbon was projected on to Sydney Opera House yesterday as a mark of respect for the victims of the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall attack.
A 40-year-old knifeman with mental illness roamed the packed shopping centre, killing six people and seriously wounding a dozen others. He was later shot by a policewoman, who was hailed for her bravery.
Police said they would investigate if the shopping centre attacker intentionally targeted women.
Five women were among the six people killed by knife attacker Joel Cauchi in the Westfield shopping centre.
New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said it was a “line of inquiry” that the attacker “focused on women and avoided the men” during his stabbing spree.
Asked during an interview with Australian broadcaster ABC News about CCTV footage which appeared to show Cauchi targeting women, Ms Webb said: “The videos speak for themselves, don’t they? And that’s certainly a line of inquiry forus.
“It’s obvious tome and it’s obvious to detectives that it seems to be an area of interest that the offender had focused on women and avoided the men."
New South Wales state premier Chris Minns said the state government would now look at creating a permanent memorial to the stabbing victims.
