United front on war in Ukraine welcome
THE world has not been this uncertain since the iron curtain came down in 1989. The wars in Ukraine and Gaza continue to see innocent people lose their homes and loved ones.
There are also security considerations closer to home here in the UK. Tensions are sky high and these wars have also fomented discord amongst communities domestically.
What Britain cannot do is cede to the whims of autocrats and terrorists but it cannot stand up for democracy on its own.
Post-Brexit, there are some who feel that the nation should take an increasingly isolationist approach.
However, that is fantasy in a world dominated by globalisation.
That is why it was good to see the Prime Minister meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Better yet, they were able to strike a united front.
For Europe’s part, it cannot afford to waver in its support for Ukraine. This has been the gravest threat on Europe’s doorstep since the Cold War.
Therefore both the PM and Chancellor Scholz’s pledge to support Ukraine for as long as it takes is to be welcomed. They are right that Russian aggression is a watershed moment.
It sends a clear message to Vladimir Putin that Russian aggression will not be tolerated and will indeed be resisted.
At a time when some Republicans in the US have called for an end to support for Ukraine and with Donald Trump in the running to return as President, it is important that Britain and Europe put on a united front.
