Minikin in record haul as Ionians run in 14 tries
HULL Ionians ran in 14 tries on their way to a record-breaking 94-26 drubbing of relegated Huddersfield on the final day of National Two North action.
Full-back Lewis Minikin claimed five of those tries, and along with 12 conversions ended the afternoon with a club record 49 points.
There were also four tries for scrum-half Sam Pocklington, while others came from George Mewburn, Alfie Celella, Sam Wilson and Josh Britton.
Huddersfield try scorers were Andrew Rollins, Thiu Barnard, Joseph Hawdon and Laurence Sanderson.
Hull came out on top in their Yorkshire derby match against Otley, winning 37-36 after a lastminute penalty from Reece Dean secured victory.
Hull led 31-17 at half-time with tries from Keane Naylor, Berretta Faraimo, Astley Harrison and Harvey Harding, while Sam Waddington and Jacob Holmes touched down for the visitors.
Otley forged into a 36-34 lead with Holmes scoring a second and Ryan Gibson and Sam Taylor also touching down, before Hull’s Dean kicked two penalties.
Wharfedale were also in freescoring mode, winning 59-31 at home against Lymm.
Tries for Wharfedale came from Sam Dickinson, Madison Hunting, Louis Verity, James Coulton, Jake Armstrong, Robbie Davidson and a penalty try.
Sheffield Tigers ran out 21-15 winners over Fylde with tries from Barney Goatley, James Norman and Louis Townsend.
In the Papa John’s Community Cup York battled to a dramatic 3130 victory at Driffield. They next face Heath after the Halifax club beat Rossendale 31-23. Selby beat Birkenhead Park 43-12.
