Cyclist to highlight slavery’s links to a changing climate

-

A RECORD-BREAKING cyclist is to ride the length of Wales to raise awareness of climate change’s link to modern slavery.

Gordon Miller, 60, is to follow the Lon Las Cymru cycling route, travelling from Cardiff to Holyhead between today and Friday.

He said he is “very excited” about the 254-mile ride, especially because he will be joined by Ffion James, a former professional road cyclist who is now a development officer for Welsh Cycling, on day one.

Mr Miller, who lives in London, said. “It’s a real privilege to ride with one the Welsh nation’s bestknown cyclists. The fact that she knows the route well will take the pressure off me having to read my onboard navigation system too!”

Mr Miller founded Ride For Freedom, a non-profit organisation which supports victims of modern slavery through cycling.

He said: “The consequences of climate change are profoundly impacting people’s lives and creating conditions for human trafficking and labour exploitation, both forms of modern slavery, to be perpetrated.”

The ride’s goal is to establish a lasting schools programme in Wales. In 2020, he set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘the largest GPS drawing by bicycle (individual)’ by cycling 620 miles to spell ‘end modern slavery’.
