The Scottish Mail on Sunday - You
‘AN EMOTIONAL MINEFIELD IN SUBURBIA’
Regular readers of YOU will notice a very different style of cover on this week’s issue. I happen to think the artfully designed, heart-shaped cluster of blue pills is quite striking, even beautiful. Which is ironic, considering its purpose is to illustrate some quite ugly truths about Viagra.
The little pill has been a revolution on a par with the birth control pill of the 1960s and, like that magic drug, it has ushered in blessings and curses in equal measure. Writer Anna Moore’s fascinating piece on page 24 takes a deep dive into the subject and discovers an emotional minefield taking place in nice suburban bedrooms across Britain.
I think this is what gripped me the most: the experiences that people are sharing, but silently and secretly. I feel strongly that the role of magazines like this can be powerful in shining a light on these issues and reassuring so many that it’s not just them. Considering Viagra’s soaring sales, I would wager that a great many of you will relate to the experiences of the women Anna spoke to, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. I think we tend to assume any talk of sex in magazines will be silly or puerile, but this story alone shows what an explosive emotional issue to navigate – particularly in long-term relationships – it really can be.
As ever, of course, your issue of YOU has a lot more to offer, such as an incredible line-up of fashion hits to see you through the party season (is anyone else thrilled to see that PJ bottoms are considered glam enough to wear out?) and a second helping of fantastic Christmas recipe ideas from the one and only Jamie Oliver. Plenty here to keep you entertained and inspired until next Sunday!
Enjoy the issue.
