‘THIS ISWHAT TRUE LOVE LOOKS LIKE’

- @ jo_elvin @ jo_elvin editor@you.co.uk

How do you make love last? It’s a question that has fascinated and perplexed all of us at some point. Today we can exclusively share some insights from the couple who should probably write the definitive book on the subject, Harry and Sandra Redknapp. When he appeared on

I’m A Celebrity… last year, Harry not only won the show but stole the hearts of the nation with his palpable adoration of the woman he’s been married to for 51 years. They still look at each other like teenagers in the throes of a first crush. Staying the course of a marriage is not easy. Doing it and remaining madly in love is a next-level achievement.

If you’re looking for some answers on how to do that, I’d suggest starting with our interview with the Redknapps on page 46. YOU’s star columnist Elizabeth Day was invited to their Sandbanks home for breakfast and a glimpse at what true love looks like. It may be cheesy but the YOU team came back from our photo shoot with songs in their hearts. Every time Sandra stepped in front of the camera in another glamorous gown, Harry’s jaw would hit the floor and he’d exclaim, ‘Oh my God, Sandra, you’re BEAUTIFUL! What have I DONE? I’ve kept you hidden away for 50 years, now I’m gonna have toyboys turning up on my doorstep! Don’t put pictures on Tinder will you? Whatever Tinder is.’ But after Harry’s jungle win they might both need to get used to sharing a bit more; at one point he nipped to the shops and was waylaid by adoring fans. He returned clutching an I’m A Celeb- themed jigsaw puzzle handed to him by a stranger!

I’m not even halfway to achieving the Redknapps’ impressive innings, but I’m feeling happy and thankful that my husband and I will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary this month. Cue all the classic ‘You don’t get that for murder’ jokes. But seriously, we can never really know what makes another couple’s relationship work. Do I have any wisdom to share on what makes a successful marriage? Well, I once asked my husband, ‘What’s one thing I could do to be a better wife?’ and he replied, ‘You could stop leaving your used teabags in the sink.’ I asked, he answered, and I stopped doing that. And we are still married, so maybe there’s something in it.

This issue is packed with love (from the Redknapps), health (from Dr Michael Mosley in our exclusive pullout of his delicious shakes recipes) and happiness (take your pick from fashion, beauty and even the joys of… vinegar!). In other words, all the things we want you to have to start your 2019 brilliantly. Happy New Year!
