‘I need two coffees to start the day’

The actress, 39, tells Samuel Fishwick about teen club nights in Yorkshire and the worst drink she’s tasted

My nan used to get fresh orange juice from the milkman’s float

and she’d always put a bottle aside for me. Every weekend she’d make the most amazing roast dinner at her house in Wrenthorpe, West Yorkshire, with crumble, and later we’d have chicken sandwiches with double butter.

I had my first taste of alcohol at a friend’s house party in Horbury when I was 15.

I was quite a late starter, really. Tropical Orange Bacardi Breezer, spin the bottle, first snog. It makes me feel a bit sick thinking about it but that’s probably the Bacardi Breezer coming back up.

There was a club called Buzz on the Westgate Run, a strip of quite dodgy clubs in Wakefield, where I was served for the first time.

I was 16 and underage, but I wore the appropriate attire to get in: a tight skirt and no tights. No one wears tights in Wakefield even in January: we’re northern.

Istartthedaywithtwo coffees with oat milk.

I’m a parent [to daughter Marnie, aged four], so I have to be a morning person, but I can’t be a human without those coffees.

Kylie Minogue makes quite a nice rosé [Kylie Minogue Rosé, £9.75, Tesco].

That’s been a revelation. I originally thought, ‘What am I doing buying this?’, but now I give it to all my friends.

Eight Stony Street in Frome, Somerset, is a great restaurant, wine bar and wine shop with a wine tasting room.

I’ve recently moved from London to the West Country and Frome is nearby. It’s my new favourite.

My first date with my partner Jim was at the London Edition hotel, on the edge of Soho.

We ordered a lot of food but ate nothing. We drank a lot of red wine but I can’t tell you what, because I was drunk. There were a lot of fireworks between us.

Jim and I were actually first together in our 20s but that was our first date back together after 14 years.

We’ve been in a relationship for two years and got married earlier this month in Heytesbury, Wiltshire, in the local church. In fact, my show, The Serial Killer’s Wife, came out the day before the wedding, which is hilarious.

I drank a lot of champagne and Whispering Angel rosé.

I didn’t make a speech, though, because that’s my worst nightmare.

Bollinger champagne makes me feel most stylish.

I love the 1920s, so anything Gatsby-esque is for me.

I’m the proud owner of two massive wine coolers.

I bought them for my hen party, which I had at my house. There weren’t even that many people there.

When I was touring in Richard III with the Old Vic in 2012, we went to Singapore and the ‘yacht bar’ [Cé la Vi] at the top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. It totally blew my mind. We were doing a world tour and were spoiled everywhere we went, but I remember thinking, ‘How is this possible? There’s a yacht on the top of a skyscraper.’

Judi Dench and I have had many drinks at the theatre bar.

When we were in Peter Hall’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream together in 2010, she was Titania and I was Hermia. I had no lines with her, but I did have to lie still

next to her after being put to sleep. I was nervous even though I didn’t have to do anything.

Pernod Absinthe is the worst drink I’ve tasted. Aniseed for me is just bleurgh. It makes me feel ill just thinking about it. Same with sambuca. I’m not really a shot girl, if I’m honest.

The producers of the Sky show Britannia gifted me a Fortnum & Mason hamper full of beautiful red and white wine a couple of years ago after a very difficult shoot in Prague. We had extreme weather, snow and freezing cold mud, and I was black and blue after having to do fight scenes in that mud. I think they felt guilty.

The Serial Killer’s Wife is out now on Paramount+
