How to look on the money

‘How’s your rich mom energy today?’ This expression makes me laugh every time I hear it. It first came to my attention after it was used to describe Gwyneth Paltrow’s look last year when famously she gave evidence at her ski-crash trial in an £800 cream cashmere knit by American designer Nili Lotan. And, of course, TV’S Succession oozed rich mom energy in every episode.

The look borrows a lot of the understated, pared-back principles from quiet luxury, and fuses them with a don’t-mess-with-me matriarch attitude. It is especially useful at work because it portrays you as someone who has their act together – even if, behind the scenes, your home or personal life is chaotic.

It’s popular, too – even without a Gywneth-style budget. One of the things I’m often asked about is how to look expensive and achieve that wonderful polished style when you’re not, well, rich. My answer? It’s actually very doable – here’s how...

Mix classic wardrobe staples such as well-fitting jeans, a blazer or a cashmere jumper with a not-so-quiet accessory, such as the most luxurious handbag your budget will stretch to. Don’t choose a logo-heavy one, but something that looks more demure and makes people work a little to figure out where it’s from.

Layer simple jewellery pieces over your outfit – a gold or silver chain, a cuff or watch, a pair of chunky gold earrings. Look to Bottega Veneta’s gold drop earrings for inspiration. Cos has a terrific range of affordable earrings at the moment.

As we age, investing in good haircare – regular treatments and products – and a great colourist are so worth it. Many people make the mistake of sticking with the same hairdresser for years out of misguided loyalty. Recently, I plucked up the courage to switch from my usual colourist and finally now have the highlights I want. Also, a weekly blow-dry goes a long way. Many rich and successful women use a blow-out as their secret weapon to achieve instant sleekness – American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has one daily to maintain her picture-perfect bob.

Tailoring is an affordable way to look put together. A waistcoat as a top with trousers, a blazer layered over a dress or a trouser suit add instant polish.

Avoid loud prints and clashing colours. If you do want to wear a bright hue, a chic way to pull it off is to pair it with a neutral base.
