WHAT IS HYPERTHYROIDISM?

-

My cat Solly has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and is starting treatment and monitoring with my vet. I am quite scared about it if I am honest. I don’t fully understand what hyperthyroidism actually is. Can you explain and offer any advice?

AGA SAYS:

It is absolutely natural to be worried or even scared. The great news is that your vet has diagnosed your cat’s condition and we do have multiple options to manage or treat it.

Hyperthyroidism is related to the overproduction of thyroid hormone, which is essential in maintaining our metabolism. The problem starts when we have too much of it, as it speeds everything up. The heart beats faster, the body is burning more

calories, the kidneys work very hard, the coat becomes unkempt, and the intestines don’t function as well. It helps us to work faster, more effectively, and be more alert. Unfortunately, it also tires the body out and damages it if overused. In the majority of cases, the overproduction is caused by a benign growth in the thyroid gland. Rarely, it can be related to an aggressive tumour.

There are four treatment options: radioactive iodine, surgery, anti-thyroid medication, and specialist diet. I would recommend that you have an honest conversation with your vet about your concerns and work on the best treatment option for your cat.

Please remember, thousands of people out there have cats affected by this disease. You are not alone.
