NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR FELINE AMPUTEE

-

Aginger stray suffering with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and a serious hind leg fracture has been given a fresh start, thanks to Mayhew.

Seven-year-old Ginger was admitted to Mayhew with a significant hind leg fracture, made even worse by his time on the streets with no treatment. It was unclear how Ginger came to injure his leg, but upon X-ray the fracture was revealed to be incredibly complex.

The charity’s vets swiftly decided that amputation was the best and safest option, teaming up with a local branch of the RSPCA to ensure Ginger had access to the best possible aftercare once the procedure had been performed. Despite risks and additional concerns posed by Ginger’s FIV status, the operation was a success and he soon bounced back on his slightly depleted feet.

Justin Ainsworth, head vet at Mayhew, who checked on Ginger after his surgery, says:“He really was super bright and the happiest I’d seen him since he was admitted. He was moving around with ease and seemed very comfortable.”

Although he’d arrived as a stray and had clearly been out on his own for some time, Ginger had a microchip and his original owner was traced. They were not able to take Ginger back. Happily, it wasn’t long before someone fell in love with Ginger and met all of his needs.
