HOW CAN YOU PREVENT DENTAL DISEASE?

-

DIET

Commercial diets are available to help slow the progression of your cat’s dental disease. These ‘dental diets’ (both wet and dry) encourage chewing so that the abrasive structure of the food removes plaque from the tooth surface.

Dental diets work best in combination with other preventative dental care (such as brushing).Your vet can recommend the most suitable diet for your cat.

BRUSHING

Most cats will tolerate daily tooth brushing (honestly!) Thimble-style brushes are an ideal way to help them learn. Begin by gently massaging around your cat or kitten’s mouth.

Once they accept this, start lifting their lips and moving the brush across their teeth.

Cat-friendly flavoured toothpastes are available (usually fish or chicken!). Many toothpastes contain an enzyme to help reduce plaque without brushing (also useful to use alone if your cat really won’t accept a brush). Never use human toothpastes as fluoride is toxic to cats.

DENTAL TOYS

Cat-nip infused toys are available specifically for your cat to chew on. These robust toys help remove plaque and massage your cat’s gums.

REGULAR DENTAL CHECKS

The earlier we find dental disease, the sooner we can treat your cat and prevent further issues.Your vet will check your cat’s teeth during their annual

health check visit. Many practices offer extra checks as part of their preventative healthcare schemes. Ask your practice if they also offer nurse-run dental clinics. The nurses at your practice can offer expert dental advice and demonstrate how best to brush your cat’s teeth.
