Artist ROXANNE GOODERHAM

Having completed a fine art degree at the Birmingham School of Art, Roxanne Gooderham admits having felt a little “lost.” In order to earn a living, she began working at a chemist, a job that continued for 13 years until a chance request steered her back to an artistic path.

“In 2010, I wanted to get back into horse riding because I’ve always loved horses ever since I was a kid.A horse came up for part-loan at a local stable and I started going three times a week to exercise it and muck it out, when one of my friends asked:‘How’s your artwork going? Have you thought about drawing people’s horses?’ It was a lightbulb moment.Virtually everyone on that yard wanted portraits of their horses doing and it all stemmed from a beautiful horse called Boswell,” she reveals.

Roxanne now has a studio in a former church which she shares with her ceramicist father, Paul, in Gailey, Staffordshire. She undertakes a range of portraiture, as well as buildings, landscapes, and historical pieces.

She prefers to work in pencil for the fine detail of portraiture, or charcoal. “I love getting my hands messy,” she explains, but also works in oils, watercolour, and mixed media.

Alongside commissions, she also produces art cards and calendars and offers drawing classes and private tuition for children and adults.

“It has taken time but I have finally been able to make art my career and now there’s no looking back,” she says. ● www.roxannegooderham.com
