Back in Jan­uary David Her­bert, known as The Egg Man, awoke one morn­ing to what he de­scribed as an “apoc­a­lyp­tic scene”. A fox had slaugh­tered 26 of his birds, leav­ing the bod­ies strewn about the field. As he sur­veyed the dev­as­ta­tion, David could see no way back for his busi­ness Her­mit Crab Eggs. Breed­ing lines, cham­pion lay­ers, juveniles, the olive-egg project – all gone in a fren­zied in­stant. But he hadn’t reck­oned on the sup­port and kind­ness of fel­low poul­try peo­ple.
