Also known as the “Rhodie” the Rhode Island is well known for its strong mahogany red plumage and brick-like shape. The breed was originally developed with a rose comb. However, it is more often seen today with a single comb, both types being acceptable under the poultry standards for the breed. It is a reliable layer that also has the ability to provide suitable table qualities. There is also a white plumage version known as the Rhode Island White but this is infrequently seen these days.
