A hardy breed that is well adapted to extremes of climate, the Rhode Island Red works well within an enclosed run but is equally effective as free rangers as they have good foraging skills. Young stock grows fast and pullets come into lay quickly with their first eggs being laid at around 20 weeks of age. The combination of their temperament, production, and ease of care make them an excellent breed for the beginner.
