Your Chickens - - Info | Glossary -

Chickens need constant access to water during their waking hours, but on some days the temperature may not get above freezing, and any water put out will quickly freeze over. Keeping the drinkers free of frost during the day can simply be a case of periodically breaking any ice that has formed, but if this is not possible then ensure the drinker is in a sheltered spot out of the wind. Alternatively, position the drinker on a heat source running at a very low setting, just to take the edge off. Placing a drinker on an upturned flower pot that has a tea light or candle inside it can stop the water from freezing, but be aware of any potential fire risk, and don’t put the drinker in or near the coop.
