Seaweed supplement will encourage feather growth

Q I obtained my most recent batch of ex-bats last winter and they were, of course, rather bald. I got them some waistcoats, but they took ages to grow any more feathers. Is there anything else I could have done?

Victoria Roberts says: Waistcoats are great for ex-bats, but only for a week or so until they settle and adapt to the ambient temperature. If waistcoats are kept on longer than this, the feathers are not encouraged to grow and new feathers (pin-feathers) can be damaged by the rubbing of the material. Some hens get ‘stuck’ in the moult, which is usually due to stress or poor feed, thus moulting hens need good quality feed so that their health is maintained, with enough nutrition left over to form feathers. Feeding a seaweed supplement (from Dorwest or NAF) will encourage and strengthen feather growth.
