LEAF CLEARING is a major operation in my garden and it clears much of the chicken poo and discarded feathers as well. But my hens do like to get involved — I make a pile of leaves and within a minute someone will have come along and dispersed the heap in all directions. Leaves are great places to pick up insects and grubs and make easy scratching material, so I guess that is why my pile is so popular. Naturally the longer the leaves lie the more nutritionally valuable they will become to chickens as they will harbour more living organisms.
