Un­usual besties

Friend­ships be­tween chick­ens are not un­usual, but Michelle Dunn has dis­cov­ered an un­break­able bond be­tween a hen and her daugh­ter that is ex­tremely rare

her nest­box, Big­tail trooped back in with her and they stayed nes­tled to­gether.

I was ex­pect­ing trou­ble when the eggs hatched, but, in fact, Big­tail sim­ply stayed with Tufty as she raised her brood. Whether she was help­ful to Tufty in rais­ing them I don’t know, but after the new ad­di­tions had grown up and been driven away, Big­tail re­mained with Tufty. To this day, the two of them re­main in­sep­a­ra­ble.
