ABDOMINAL UPSETS CAN CAUSE APPARENT LAMENESS IN CHICKENS

Your Chickens - - Ask The Vet -

QI have had chickens for just over a year without problems. However, one of my hens now has ‘stuff’ coming out of her vent. She is also starting to hobble. Please can you give me some advice

ABen says: It would be important to ascertain what the ‘stuff’ is. I would advise collecting some and taking your hen to your nearest chicken friendly practice for a detailed examination. Poultry will appear lame with most abdominal upsets. The vent is an opening where three separate body systems converge — the gastrointestinal system, the reproductive system and the urinary system. There are multiple possibilities as to what could be going on, so a true identification of the substrate is important.
