Your Dog

BRAVE BEAMISH

- Jane H. Wood, via email.

You featured my book ‘GoldenEars: The Pale Skulls’ in the March 2021 issue of Your Dog Magazine. In the same issue, I came across a report on a study into the impact on owners of caring for a dog with epilepsy — and it brought it all back to me.

My ‘GoldenEars’ series of books began following the loss of my beloved pet dog, Beamish. He appeared on your pets’ pictures pages back in March 2002. He was 14 weeks old in the picture I sent to your magazine.

Beamish was our beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and died in my arms at the vet’s, just before his 13th birthday.

He had suffered from canine epilepsy since the age of four, and as your report stated, the condition is a ticking time bomb for owners. My husband and I (I am now 70 years old) loved him so much and we altered our lives to fit around him, to keep the stress he felt to a minimum.

Beamish was normally a happy little dog, and his indomitable spirit and courage through the bad times will stay with me forever.

His death was the catalyst that propelled me into writing, and the act of putting pen to paper helped me to come to terms with my loss. But seven years on the thought of him always brings me to tears. He is in the story with me, forever my precious boy.
