Over the past year, our homes have been a sanctuary, and Sue and Patrick feel immensely lucky to be enjoying theirs together. Both tragically widowed in their early fifties, each losing their spouses to cancer, the couple met while volunteering for Cancer Research UK and married a year later, in December 2016. Their home is a place to celebrate cherished memories and create new ones. ‘We’ve brought together our past lives and changed and added things to our house to make it ours,’ says Sue. ‘As we’ve travelled, we’ve bought pieces of art and ceramics to add to our home, with shared memories of our special occasions. We know just how lucky we are to have this second chance and we intend to make the most of every opportunity we’re fortunate to have.’

Indeed, it is this appreciation for today that has inspired the couple to pledge gifts in their Wills to Cancer Research UK to help save lives tomorrow. With gifts in Wills funding over a third of the charity’s research, they’re a vital part of the fight against cancer. ‘Cancer Research UK has a bold ambition to get to 3 in 4 surviving cancer for 10 years or more by 2034,’ says Patrick. ‘In 2034, my grandchildren will be 14, 16 and 18 years old, and that’s a world I want them to grow up in.’

Leave a lasting legacy

Having fundraised for Cancer Research UK for so many years, Sue and Patrick are passionate about continuing to do so with gifts in their Wills. ‘I support Cancer Research UK during my life and want to continue to support their life-saving research after my death,’ explains Sue. They’ve chosen a residuary gift. This type is the most beneficial because it’s a percentage of your estate, rather than a fixed amount. ‘A residuary gift is less likely to be affected by inflation,’ says Patrick. ‘This type of gift ensures I can make a donation that reflects my commitment to Cancer Research UK.’

Your vital contribution

Everything the couple has been through has made them even more thankful for what they have now. ‘We’ve realised how important a secure and loving home is,’ says Sue. And, with fundraising falling due to the pandemic, supporting Cancer Research UK through gifts in Wills is especially vital. Join Sue and Patrick in leaving a gift in your Will to Cancer Research UK today, and help the charity’s dedicated researchers create a world where everyone survives cancer.
