Making mortar

For a mortar that’s ideal for blocks and bricks, mix five parts building sand to one part cement. Place the sand on a clean plywood board and make it into a doughnut shape, with a central hole. Mix the cement into the sand with a shovel, folding in to the hollow centre. Gradually add water, continuing to mix, until the mortar is the consistency of a stiff porridge.
