3 ways TO CLASH COLOURS LIKE A PRO
Choose hues for your statement scheme with these tips from Kelly Collins, interior designer and Head of Creative at Swyft 1 Pick harmonious tones. The first piece of key advice I would give when choosing contrasting colours is that the strength of the tones for both hues must match each other. This can be achieved by selecting colours on opposing sides of the colour wheel – for example, green and red. 2 Match a trio of colours. I’d recommend going with three contrast colours for a triadic scheme – this is made up of three colours that are equidistant from each other on the colour wheel, which produces a highcontrast effect while preserving balance. Such a composition looks vibrant even when you use pale and unsaturated hues. 3 Work out the ratios. Schemes work best when the amounts of the colours used in the design are not equal, as a variety of proportions creates more interest. Try a classic 60-30-10 ratio: 60 per cent of a dominant colour, 30 per cent of a secondary hue or texture, and 10 per cent of an accent shade.
