Kirsty Wilson, 38, a television executive, and Ainsley Keeler, 35, a television director and cameraman, live in a three-bedroom detached 1800s cottage in Essex with their dogs, Squid and Goose.

WHAT DID YOU WANT FROM YOUR NEW KITCHEN?

The original kitchen was in good condition, but not in keeping with the period of the property or my style, as it was a white, sleek handleless design. I wanted to bring back a period feel and add some character.

HOW DID YOU MEET THE CHALLENGES?

After a bad extension done by cowboy builders, we were left with little money to redo the kitchen, so instead we had to work with what we had. The kitchen cabinets and the bi-fold doors have been transformed using paint and new handles, while the rest of the space has been updated using accessories and plants.
