SAVE ON eco Christmas buys

-

With so much to think about at this time of year, it’s easy to get carried away and forget the environmental impact that our purchases are making. So, before you hit the shops, get creative instead with these ideas and save money while being more eco-conscious.

Swap to homemade wrapping paper Make your own gift wrap by stamping a design using water-based paint on recyclable kraft paper. Avoid traditional sticky tape that uses a plastic-based adhesive – use twine or brown paper tape instead – or even try wrapping gifts in a scarf or piece of fabric that can be reused.

Go for a potted tree The most eco-friendly tree option is to buy a living potted tree that can be planted in your garden after the festive season is over. It can then be brought inside year after year, saving you money as well as being more environmentally friendly. If you don’t have anywhere to plant it, try renting a real tree instead – you can even choose to get the same one back every Christmas.

Make your own decorations There are plenty of ways to make decorating your home more planetfriendly, such as making chains from leftover paper, or collecting fallen pine cones and holly from your local woods. Chocolate-filled advent calendars usually contain lots of plastic packaging, so why not try a handmade reusable design instead?
