‘Smart technology is completely integrated into our everyday life’
The contemporary home that Holly Hinton and her partner, Greg Thomas, have created is in an altogether different league from the outdated three-bedroom property they bought 18 months ago. Now fully renovated and extended – a process that took a year due to Covid-related delays – the house in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, boasts five bedrooms, three bathrooms and all the smart technology the couple need to make their life easier and to futureproof their home. ‘Smart technology is completely integrated into our day-today life now,’ says Holly, ‘and I’m already researching future options, such as installing an electric car charging point.’
Making the house energy-efficient was a priority for Holly and Greg, so insulation was added to the existing cavity walls, underfloor heating installed on the ground floor and the upstairs radiators were all fitted with individual thermostats. The Heatmiser Neo smart heating control system enables them to regulate their heating and hot water remotely, which reduces wasted energy for smaller bills. Security was an important factor too, so the couple had the Pro Control Plus video system installed. ‘We have all the cameras on our phones,’ explains Holly, ‘so we can save any relevant footage and we can also use the app to set or disconnect the alarm.’ Also operated by their phones is the Sonos sound system, the wi-fi network that covers everything from music and radio to TV. ‘It’s especially great for parties, as only we can control the music so no one with bad taste can take over as DJ,’ laughs Holly.
Taking on such a large project involved a considerable amount of research, with the kitchen taking the most time. The modern look of Wren’s Milano range really stood out with its handleless doors and metallic trim. Holly chose smart energy-efficient appliances; the Bosch steam oven, washing machine and tumbler dryer can be controlled through the Home Connect app. ‘It’s connected to Amazon Alexa,’ says Holly, ‘but I find it easier to operate using my phone and the ability to control the oven while not physically in front of it is really handy.’
A key feature of the kitchen is the island unit with its contrasting Metallic Night gloss finish and copper trim.
Keen that nothing would detract from its appearance, Holly chose a smart air venting induction hob from Faber. Costing just under £2,000, the dualpurpose Galileo has the advantage of incorporating cooking and extraction in one efficient and stylish unit so there’s no need for a chimney hood that would obscure the view of the garden.
Holly’s advice to anyone thinking of investing in smart technology for their home? ‘Make a point of calling the company direct. Customer service staff are passionate about the products they sell and speaking to them really helped me make informed decisions, which were not based purely on price.’
