HOW TO measure up

-

Kate Duckworth from Swift Direct Blinds explains how to get perfectly fitted blinds and shutters with this measuring advice

When choosing blinds, decide whether you want to have recess blinds or an exact fit – recessed blinds fit within the window opening, while exact blinds sit outside the recess and will block out more light than a recess fit.

For shutters, measure the recess diagonally from corner to corner on both sides. If the difference between the two is 12mm or less, go for recess shutters; if it’s more, fit them outside the recess.

Measure the width and drop in three different places on the window and choose the smallest measurement from the three.

For exact fit blinds, measure a minimum of approximately 5cm extra width on both sides of the window, and an extra 7cm to the top of the window recess, to ensure there is sufficient overlap.

For shutters outside the recess, add 5cm extra to the sides, top and bottom of the window recess; if your windowsill protrudes, don’t add an overlap to the bottom.

Factor in any obstructions while measuring that may get in the way of your blind or shutter.

The measurements needed may differ between styles and brands, so always double-check the instructions before ordering.
