What are my consumer rights? When buying from an individual seller, as opposed to a retailer, the Consumer Rights Act says that the goods you get must be as they were described to you by the seller. There’s no obligation on the seller to disclose any faults, however, though misrepresentation isn’t allowed. So they can’t say something is new when it’s secondhand but the onus is on you to ask about any faults or defects. Can I return an item after I’ve bought it? Private sellers aren’t under any legal obligation to provide a refund or return if you change your mind, so always make sure you are completely happy before handing over any money. How can I keep myself and my money safe? If you are collecting or viewing the item in person, take a friend with you or meet the buyer in a public place. To keep your money safe, don’t make any advance payments, even if the seller tries to pressure you and, if paying online, use a secure service with buyer protection, like PayPal. If you are having the item sent by post, ask for it to be tracked.
