WE TEST… MILK FROTHERS

Things we considered: Is it easy to use? Does it froth the milk well? Any special features?

-

Stainless steel milk frother, £14, ProCook

Whip up frothy cappuccinos with ease with this battery-operated stainless steel frother, which comes with a whisk and frother attachment to create foamy milk or stiffen egg whites – though you’ll have the heat the milk separately. A curved handle prevents it slipping out your hand while using, and the sturdy weight gives good control, which feels much more expensive than its price point. It comes with a metal stand for worktop storage or to hold the frother while it dries, though take care as the frother is top heavy and we found it toppled over a couple

of times.

Salter electric milk frother steamer, £34.99, Amazon Budding baristas will find this dual-function frother and steamer an essential piece of kit. Several settings, including warming, frothing and an iced function, craft everything from creamy lattes to smoothies. Its capacity provides a single serving (rather than foaming a whole jug with a handheld frother), but each setting was very speedy – ready in less time than a kettle takes to boil. The unit is cordless and rechargeable, and also easy to clean with a removable whisk and nonstick coating.

Glass milk frother, £43.99, VonShef

This compact jug frother is small enough to pack away in a cupboard, but stylish enough that you won’t mind keeping it on your worktop. The glass jug makes it easy to keep clean (although take care not to break it, as the machine won’t work without it!). It has two temperature settings – you press the button once for hot, twice for cold – and takes just a few minutes to get a café-style froth going. Oat or soya milk take longer though, so try barista versions of these for a better foam.

Aerolatte To Go handheld milk frother, £10.99, Lakeland

Sleek and with a handy storage tube, this frother can be neatly tucked away in a drawer rather than take up valuable counter space. Make sure to move the whisk slowly around the mug of milk, as if you go too fast you could cause a kitchen disaster! This frother produced a good level of foam

(with dairy and barista oat milk), but unless you’re a pro, there’s little control over how much froth there is – if the frothing whisk goes too close to the top of the milk you risk creating an uncontrollable whirlpool. We like that it’s multipurpose – it can also be used in your next baking project.
