Hang your botanical beauties in pride of place with hanging planters lined in waterproof fabric
If you love filling your home with plants as much as we do, you may find yourself struggling for surface space on which to display your greenery. Luckily, we’ve found a DIY solution: handmade hanging planters. Made with a waterproof lining, and securely suspended with cotton cord, they’re as practical as they are stylish. They’re a great skillsbooster, too – you’ll learn how to sew boxed corners, attach eyelets and add a lining.

1 Cut two pieces measuring 25 x 25cm from the cotton fabric for the outer, and the same from the lining and interfacing. Iron the interfacing onto the back of the outer pieces. If you’re using cotton fabric for the lining, iron the Lamifix to the right side (RS) to make them waterproof. Cut two small 5cm squares out from the bottom two corners of all your pieces.
2 Take the pair of outer pieces and sew them together, with RS facing, down both sides and across the bottom using a 1cm seam allowance. Do the same with the waterproof lining pieces, leaving a small 4-5cm gap in one of the side seams.
3 Open out the
assembled holders. On each one, align the opposite edges of the cut-out squares to create boxed corners. Sew, lining up the side seams, using a 1cm seam allowance.
4 Turn the outer RS out and then place the lining over the outside of the outer and pin it in place around the top edge. Stitch all the way around to join the outer and lining together. 5 Using the gap
you left in the lining, turn the pot holder RS out and push the lining into the outer. Flatten it out and smooth it over with a cool iron before sewing up the gap in the lining by hand. Fold over the top edge.
6 Mark four points, around 3cm in from the top edge, to show where the eyelets will go. Make sure they’re placed so that the pot will hang evenly. Using the instructions that come with the eyelets, set the eyelets in place where marked.
7 Cut two lengths of the cotton rope measuring 2m and thread the ends through the eyelets. Tie the cord in a double knot on the inside of the pot holder to hold the cord in place.
8 Cut four small squares of the faux leather and sew them in place over each of the eyelets to neaten.
