Things we considered: How comfortable is it? Does it retain its shape well? Any special features?
Slumberdown Memory Plus firmer pillow, £19
Surprisingly soft and lightweight despite its firmness, this pillow is a good option for those who want to try the support of memory foam without it feeling too heavy. Its small size allows it to fit easily into a regular-sized pillowcase without straining the seams (ideal for picture-perfect set-ups).
It’s comfortable, but doesn’t feel too dissimilar to a regular pillow, and isn’t quite as springy as we would have liked.
Coolmax Contour extra-firm memory foam pillow, £39.50, Marks & Spencer
Thanks to its three-height, contoured design, this pillow is ideal for side, back and front sleepers, so is a great option if you like to change your sleeping position during the night.
Although described as ‘extra firm’, it feels more ’medium-soft’, with a pleasing squish that makes it as comfy as it is supportive. There are three ways you can use it, so it may take a few nights to find your optimal position.
Essentials memory foam medium-support pillow,
£12, Dunelm
As the cheapest option here, this pillow won’t break the bank if you’re not sure about switching to memory foam. Designed for both side and back sleepers, it moulds to your head well and gives good support – it also springs back into shape satisfyingly after being squashed. It has a strong smell when first unpacked, but you’re advised to air the pillow for 72 hours before use (which also lets it find its proper shape). It also claims to be machine-washable – an unusual bonus.
Memory foam bamboo pillow, £44.95, Panda London
This pillow’s firmness can be initially unsettling, but it has a pleasing amount of squidge when in use. It moulds to your head and springs back into shape with ease – making it an excellent option if you’re prone to fidgeting (although we found it worked best when sleeping on our backs or sides). If you don’t want to risk stretching your favourite pillow case, a removable cover made from soft bamboo is included.
