Hacking at Badminton
A once water-shy mare splashing in a lake and a rider finally plucking up the confidence to hack out solo. It’s been another fun-filled month of adventure for our Hack 1000 milers
WE TOOK #HACK1000MILES to Badminton in May, where 50 people indulged in a rare ride around the famous estate, raising much-needed funds for Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled. Riders were able to get up close and personal with the CCI4* fences, with the 10-mile route taking horses past the Quarry, Huntsman’s Close and Badminton House, as well as through the Lake. As a bonus, each finisher took home a Your Horse magazine goody bag, filled with freebies from our brilliant #hack1000miles sponsors, SEIB, Dublin, Baileys Horse Feeds, Wintec and NAF. One mare who caught our eye as she splashed playfully in the Lake was Johanna Searle’s Je Suis, a 22-year-old ex-racehorse. Johanna has owned the mare for 12 years and, when she first bought her, Je Suis was terrified of water — she would only walk through a puddle if led by a human. With time, perseverance and patience, Je Suis now hacks out confidently and she loves water — watching her gallop through the Lake was a joy to see. Claire Taylor has also been making brilliant progress with her horse Pie.
