NEW FOREST
Intelligent and agile
This mountain and moorland is something of a misnomer, as its home is heath and woodland in the south of England. The New Forest shares the same traits of the other native British ponies, such as strength and intelligence. It has a narrower build than some of the stockier breeds and the various stallions allowed to influence it are evident in its pretty head. It’s said that Marske, sire of the great racehorse Eclipse, ran in the Forest, having been sold to a Hampshire farmer when his owner, the Duke of Cumberland, died. Marske was used on ‘country mares’ until his most famous son began to win.
