HIGHLAND
Strong and versatile
The Highland pony was used to bring stag carcasses down from the Scottish hills. Known as garrons, these ponies were smaller than the modern breed but incredibly strong and enduring, surefooted and easy to keep. There are few records of Highland ponies before the 19th century, but the breed is now prized for its strength, beauty and versatility. It is a particular favourite of The Queen, whose Balmoral Stud has produced many show ring champions as well as true working ponies.
